Boys will be boys and dog boys will be muddy

Dillon loves nothing better than getting as dirty as he can by playing in the mud. Well, even better than this seems to now be playing with another waggy boy in said mud. I was reminded of the sheer joy that a watching 2 young dogs playing can bring. Dillon has a new doggy play pal that’s just about as bouncy and energetic as him. They met for the first time and did the mad chase me / no you chase me dance around the dog walking field. Not that I was complaining as it was both smile bringing to watch and it was pouring with rain so I got to shelter with the other owner under the trees.

I’ve always loved it when our dogs make doggy pals, often you end up having the human’s on the end of the lead’s as pals and it adds to the walking of your dogs. When you first meet a dog it’s always a toss of the dice if that dog is ‘play material’ or cause problems. Finding safe doggy friends is a real pleasure part of owning a dog. When you have only one dog it’s even more crucial as your dog gets to chill out and kick back with other dogs - something that’s great from a socialisation point for a puppy and a reinforcing learning for an adult. After all these waggy friends speak their language so of course they need that. I love it when there is a safe group of dogs all playing and ‘doing their thing’ - it’s great to see dogs in this relaxed fun state.

It’s important as a dog owner you recognise that sometimes dogs just have to be dogs. There is something so great to find another dog that plays nicely and in Dillon’s case as full on as him. They teared around that field getting well and truly tired and muddy. We so often humanise our animals which is where about 99% of all dog / human issues seem to come from. It’s when you truly let them ‘be a dog’ that you are open up to the fun that brings. Of course, you need boundaries but sometimes dog boys have to be dog boys.
